Choosing wort chillers

What changes the purchase?

Immersion coils keep wort in the kettle

The copper Clover, stainless Silver Serpent and stainless Anvil use cooling water inside a coil. Clover and Silver Serpent are supplied with attached leads; Anvil lists a hose length and separate hardware. Check coil clearance and the actual water-source connector, including any separate indoor faucet adapter.

External chillers need two planned circuits

The Northern Brewer counterflow unit specifies 1/2 in male NPT wort ports and garden-hose-thread water ports. The 40 plate FERRODAY specifies 1/2 NPT wort ports and 3/4 NPT water ports. These fitting types should not be treated as interchangeable just because a hose or adapter also uses a nominal fraction.

Include access and cleaning in the comparison

An immersion coil exposes its wort-contact surface on the outside. Counterflow and brazed-plate units have internal wort passages. The Northern Brewer instructions call for upstream leaf-hop straining, outlet-temperature checks and draining after care. FERRODAY calls for upstream filtration and cannot be opened for scrubbing. No fixed chilling time is promised.

Questions before choosing

Does an immersion coil carry wort through the tubing?

No. Cooling water passes through the coil and wort remains outside it in the kettle.

Will every three-quarter-inch hose connector fit the plate chiller?

No universal fit is established. Its selected water ports are 3/4 NPT; match the actual thread type as well as the nominal size.

Does a chiller automatically control the pitching temperature?

No controller is supplied by these references. Check the actual wort temperature and follow the chosen equipment instructions.
