The equipment in use
This counterflow unit cools wort as it passes through an internal tube while water travels the opposite way around it. Choose this external layout when your kettle outlet and transfer arrangement can feed wort through the chiller. Unlike an immersion coil, its wort-contact passage needs cleaning internally.
The unit is specified as 304 stainless with 18 ft of contact length. Wort ports are 1/2 in male NPT; the water ports use male garden-hose threads. Check both sets of connections, since the two circuits have different roles and fitting types. A pump, wort hoses and the maker’s optional connection kits are not established as included.
Northern Brewer provides separate gravity-fed and pump-fed diagrams. It calls for opposite flow directions, starting cooling water before wort and monitoring the wort temperature at the outlet. These setup choices do not establish one guaranteed cooling time or permission to rely on an unmeasured outlet temperature.
The maker warns that leaf hops can clog the internal path and describes straining them or using a hop spider before the chiller. Follow its before-and-after-use cleaning and sanitizing procedure and drain completely for storage. Compare an immersion coil when direct access to the wort-contact surface is the more useful difference for your cleaning routine.
