Grain mills

Choose a malt crusher by its roller arrangement, hopper and supporting mount. Both mills include a hand crank; neither should be treated as a freestanding flour appliance or a complete powered milling system.

Choosing grain mills

What changes the purchase?

Two rollers or three

The FERRODAY GM-M-504 uses two stainless rollers with an aluminum-alloy hopper and crank. The MILL710 MaltMuncher uses three cold-rolled steel rollers and a 6061 aluminum body and hopper. The maker describes an adjustable lower roller on the MaltMuncher. Compare the actual construction rather than assuming every silver-colored roller is stainless.

Hopper capacity and the crush setting

FERRODAY specifies up to 7.7 lb of grain in the hopper; the MaltMuncher specification is 12 lb. These are grain-mass designations, not 12 liters or a guaranteed processing rate. Adjustments let you choose a crush for the malt and process, but no universal gap or extraction result is established.

Provide the missing support

The FERRODAY selected version has no base plate, and the MaltMuncher base board is optional. Plan an appropriate mount and a collection vessel. A crank is supplied for manual operation; a drill is optional, not an included motor. Follow model-specific care: the MaltMuncher maker calls for dry rollers and brushing after use.

Questions before choosing

Do I need a drill for either mill?

No. Both selected references include a manual crank. A drill or motor is separate optional equipment.

Can either mill stand on a counter without a mount?

A suitable supporting arrangement still needs to be provided. The selected FERRODAY excludes its base plate and the MaltMuncher board is optional.

Does 12 lb mean a 12-liter hopper?

No. The MaltMuncher grain-hopper specification is a mass designation. The 12 lb designation does not specify a 12-liter hopper volume.
