Choose where the wort will be
An immersion coil leaves the whole batch in the kettle. A counterflow or plate unit needs a wort path through the external body and onward to the receiving vessel. Start with the kettle outlet and intended transfer arrangement rather than choosing only by the chiller’s compact appearance.
Match the water supply and both outlets
Clover includes a garden-hose adapter; indoor taps may need a separate adapter. Counterflow has garden-hose-thread water ports, while the selected plate version uses NPT. Plan the warm-water outlet separately from the wort outlet and follow the unit’s marked flow directions.
Compare the parts already supplied
Silver Serpent has pre-assembled leads and drop-angle connections. Anvil supplies a 10 ft hose length and hardware. The FERRODAY use image excludes loose fittings, and the counterflow connection kits are separate. Check the exact package before assuming hoses, a pump or quick disconnects are included.
Choose a cleaning routine you can complete
The counterflow maker supports gravity or pump layouts and provides an internal cleaning procedure. The plate body cannot be taken apart and requires filtering ahead of it. An accessible immersion surface is a different maintenance arrangement. Use model-specific instructions rather than transferring a chemical dose between materials.

Is a pump required for every external chiller?
Northern Brewer provides a gravity-fed counterflow layout as well as a pump-fed one. Do not assume that establishes the same transfer arrangement for every plate unit.
What should I confirm before adding hose adapters?
Identify the exact water and wort ports, hose sizes and receiving arrangement. A nominal size without a thread type is incomplete.
Can I choose by advertised cooling minutes alone?
No single verified time is provided for every batch and water supply. Compare the complete arrangement and monitor the actual result at the relevant point.
