How this item fits your brewing setup

This diffusion plate is for continuous sparging, the stage where incoming water rinses the grain bed during lautering. Its disc spreads the incoming flow instead of directing a bare stream at one spot. Choose it for water distribution above the mash, rather than for mixing grain or screening the kettle outlet.

The disc diameter is 3.25 in, also given as 82.5 mm, with a 1/2 NPT male connection. Check that the receiving fitting has the matching female thread and that the disc can be positioned in your vessel. A matching nominal connection alone does not establish a complete installation.

The part is specified as 304 stainless steel. The source describes use with a gravity-fed hot liquor tank or with your own pump and flow-control valve. Those are alternative ways of supplying water; the plate itself is not a pump, regulator or automatic level controller.

Choose a mash paddle when the task is breaking up dry grain clumps. Choose an outlet screen when the task is straining material before liquid leaves the vessel. These tools can serve different parts of a brew day, but neither substitutes for the diffuser’s incoming-water role or guarantees a particular extraction result.

Questions about this product

What else should you know?

Does it filter wort on the way out of a kettle?

No. Its role is spreading incoming sparge water. An outlet screen has a different position and purpose.

Do I have to buy a pump?

The source also describes gravity feed from a hot liquor tank. Your setup must provide the needed water supply and flow control.

Will it stir dry clumps out of the mash?

No. Use an appropriate paddle for that mixing task; a diffusion disc is not a stirring tool.
